At a glance: Zagori and Olympus are the two most famous hiking destinations in Northern Greece. In fact, the Cultural Landscape of Zagori has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2023. The classic route is crossing the Vikos Gorge, from Monodendri to Vikos (approximately 12 km, 5–7 hours). In contrast, on Mount Olympus, most trails start from Litochoro and Prionia. However, the summit refuges are usually open only from mid-May to late October.

Fresh air, golden leaves, quiet paths. That’s why, for many, autumn is the best season for the mountains. However, buses to the mountain villages are few, and the most beautiful trails start where public transport ends. Thus, with a car, you can combine Zagori and Olympus into one trip, at your own pace.

Zagori: Stone Villages, Bridges, and Vikos Gorge

Zagori stretches across the Pindus mountains, north of Ioannina. It comprises dozens of stone villages, connected by old cobblestone paths and arched bridges. In 2023, UNESCO added the Cultural Landscape of Zagori to its World Heritage list. The list includes 20 villages of Central Zagori, Tymfi, and Papingo.

Vikos Gorge: From Monodendri to Vikos

Item Details
Starting and End Point Monodendri → Vikos (or continue to Papingo)
Length approx. 12 km (10–12.6 km depending on the source)
Duration usually 5–7 hours with stops
Difficulty moderate to demanding, with a steep descent at the beginning
Note linear route, so you will need a taxi for the return or a second car

The turn-off to Papingo comes after approximately 4.5–5 hours and adds about 2 hours. Conversely, if you want something shorter, you can descend from Monodendri into the gorge and return.

The Bridges of Kipi

South of Monodendri, near Kipi, you will see some of the most famous stone bridges. Furthermore, you can reach them with just a few minutes’ walk, making them ideal for the afternoon of your arrival.

Olympus: Hiking on the Mountain of the Gods

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. Your base, therefore, is Litochoro. From there, the road ascends to Prionia, where the trail to the summit begins on the European path E4.

Prionia – Spilios Agapitos Refuge

The ascent is approximately 6 km and takes an average of about 3 hours. From the refuge, the trail then continues to Skala and Mytikas.

Zagori and Olympus in November

The Spilios Agapitos refuge usually operates from mid-May to late October. Therefore, from November onwards, there is usually no open refuge high up, and there may be snow. For the summit, you will need experience and equipment. To be sure, you can first inquire at the refuge at 23520 81800.

Our suggestion for November is simple: stay low. For example, the route in the Enipeas Gorge, between Litochoro and Prionia, is part of the E4. It passes through a forest, next to the river and natural lakes.
